Mr James Mainey - Head of Department
Mathematics
Students in maths have been experiencing some amazing learning opportunities this year so far, and Term 3 is only just starting.
In senior maths, our students have been learning about financial decisions and the impacts they have on lifestyles, project management, timeframes and decision making, as well as rates of change of population and motion. These students have assessment coming up or just gone and will soon be preparing for their external exams that are coming all too quickly.
In junior maths, students are just about to receive their assignments that are all based around solving a real-world problem, developing a unique solution, and communicating their solution effectively.
For the Year 7’s this revolves around choosing a builder for their bathroom remodelling and deciding which is the best for the job based on the rates they charge.
For the Year 8’s this is starting a business and factoring in the costs, taxes, mark-up and splitting of potential profits to try and make some money.
For the Year 9’s this is making a new probability style game that is enjoyable to play but is also fair to play for all.
Maths is always teaching students the numeracy skills behind real-world problems and ways of thinking through problems, to develop unique and creative solutions.
