Head of Department - Science
Last week, to celebrate National Science Week, the science department ran a couple of competitions. Our UQ Science Ambassador, Sam Park, set up a picture scavenger hunt. Students who found all the posters were put into a draw, with the lucky winner randomly selected. The winner for this competition was Judah Hobson, in Year 9.
Students were given the opportunity to participate in a colouring in competition, with all entries judged by science teachers to select the best. Elliot Wood in Year 7 was selected as the best submission.
Teachers and school staff were also given the opportunity to join in the science fun, with a trivia competition. The winner, with the most correct answers was Ms Sophie Follett.
We also would like to congratulate our UQ ambassador Sam Park, for being one of the winners of the UQ mini-scientist photo competition, with his photo of Prof Stan Thorpe.

Our Science Week Star Gazing Evening was unfortunately postponed due to weather. This event has been rescheduled to 4th September, 6pm. Interested students are welcome to come with their parents or guardian. Bring a blanket, chairs and a telescope or binoculars. The school’s telescope will also be set up for shared viewing.
In the classroom, science experiments are continuing to occur every week. Year 7 students have completed their unit on the Sun, Earth, and Moon, and are now learning about Scientific Classification. Year 8 students have been learning about cells and body systems. Over the next couple of weeks, they will be dissecting a kidney and a heart. Year 9 students are finishing off their electricity Student Experiment assignment this week and will be moving on to sound and light waves. Year 10 students are starting their Student Experiment assignment on reaction rates this week, after learning about the Periodic Table and types of reactions. Year 11 and 12 students in Biology, Chemistry and Physics are finalising their Unit 2 or Unit 4 content, and starting to prepare for exams next term.
